How to Register for Classes

Step 1: Complete the Placement Test

All students must take a placement test before registering for any classes. NYGC uses the Cambridge English Unlimited Placement Test, which includes both written and oral components to assess your English proficiency level. The test typically takes about 45 minutes to complete.

About the Placement Test

The Cambridge English Unlimited Placement Test aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), an internationally recognized standard developed by Cambridge University. The CEFR categorizes language ability into six levels:

  • A1-A2: Elementary to Pre-Intermediate
  • B1-B2: Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate
  • C1-C2: Advanced

NYGC has developed a placement scoring system aligned with CEFR standards and continuously reviews its effectiveness to ensure students are placed at the most appropriate class level for their current abilities.

Step 2: Register for Classes

Once you receive your placement test results, you will work with a School Agent and the Academic Department to register for classes that match your proficiency level. The School Agent and the Academic department will review your test score to determine which courses are available to you and ensure you're placed with students of similar ability levels.
