Elective courses for ESL & TOEFL students

Our program also offers elective courses to stimulate the minds of our students.  Elective courses are designed to offer our students an alternative to their ESL classes.   Elective courses are offered every Friday.  Each elective course offers the students a specialized view of the given topic.  The following elective courses are currently offered:

Conversation:
The conversation class is a discussion forum where students talk, debate, and express their opinions on a specific topic that the instructor prepares.  The goal of the class is to offer the students a comfortable environment where they can utilize and improve their speaking ability.

American TV Shows:
The American TV Shows class delivers a comprehensive view of current popular television programs.  The class instructor aids the students in understanding American cultural values, slang, and idioms expressed in well-known American television programs.

Current Events:
In this 2-hour class, the instructor covers various issues from Janet Jackson’s Super bowl wardrobe malfunction snafu to gun violence in schools.  The class reads and talks about the US presidential election or controversial art works – real-time stories as they happen in our daily lives!  Articles from these advanced media sources are offered in easy-to-digest, fun ways through reading, listening, and speaking exercises.

Academic Writing:
The academic writing course prepares students for university and graduate school writing.  The instructor reviews strategies on how to improve their writing ability to match the high demands of higher education in the United States.  Included in the class are methods students can use to read articles faster, increase their comprehension, and how to compose college and/or graduate school essays.

Media:
The media course offers students an analysis of American TV shows, films and documentaries.  The goal of the class is to present our students with a view of the American culture through television.  The class uses television to facilitate discussions and debates.  Furthermore, television is used to review and instill new knowledge regarding vocabulary, slang and idioms.
Grammar:
The goal of the grammar class is to prepare the students for the writing section of the TOEFL exam.  Through classroom exercises, the class reviews ways to brainstorm and write completely thoughts in a timely manner to increase their TOEFL scores.

Accent:
The Accent Class has been created in order to enhance pronunciation, accent and vocabulary. In this class, the students are given different articles on various subjects. The students read the article aloud allowing the instructor to correct their pronunciation & accent. Following this, the vocabulary & main idea of the article are discussed. To wrap up the session, the teacher gives the students a reading comprehension activity which is then checked orally, thus allowing students to practice their oral skills once again.
